My Reggie & Products

So for this Regimen post I will tell you what I do and show you the products that I use. I only use the products that I LOVE! My regimen...varies depending on the products I use, if they are all natural, product buildup and the style I am rocking.

Shampoo - Once a week or every other (depends how much build up or unnatural products are in my hair)

I have 2 Shampoo's that I can't live without. Both do not strip my hair. Organix;s is a thick lucious shampoo so I dilute it. It smells divine! Deva Curl makes my scalp tingles, it feels so clean and refreshed. When shampooing or co-washing, I always make sure that any shedding is removed every time I pass my hands or comb through my hair. I don't want those hairs to get create tangles or knots.

Conditioner - (varies, every wk, every 3days, all depends)
As you can see I have a nice variety of conditioners that I LOVE!

Once my hair is clean, I load my hair up with conditioner and divide it into 4/6 sections and detangle and clip my hair up. Once again through this whole process I am always removing shed hair from my comb and my hands. The conditioners that I use the most hands down are Aussie, Burts Bees and Giovanni.
Deep Condition (Once a Week) / Protein Treatment (every other week)
Usually I let these sit in my head for a minimum of 30mins, but I love for them to linger for at least an hour. As for the Protein Treatment I do use products in the home like eggs, mayo, honey. I cover my hair with a cap/trash bag (whatever you use) then I wrap it with a towel for extra heat. Sometimes I sit under a hooded bonnet but most of the time I don't. For deep conditioning I also use the conditioners above for deep conditioning as well, or use olive oil.

Leave In (after wash/co-wash)  Styling (every week / ever 2 or 3 days)

I still am using the Kimmay Tube Leave In Recipe with Knot Today, as my leave in and detangler.
Shea butter is not displayed but its a huge part of my regimen, cant live with out it.

Oils (use when styling and after leave in applied) Also use Olive Oil.

I also have a water oil mix in my spray bottle for when I re-wet my hair for styling.

I think that is about it... if not ask me

Hair Rules Kinky Curling Cream

Yesterday I walked into ULTA. It was my first time. I had to contain my excitement when I finally got to the back of the store where the hair products were. I just gasped WOW the products that I want to try are HERE! Yippee! So this is one of the new products that I have been wanting to try. We shall see how it goes.

Let's Talk Length Check

So on September 2nd I went to this amazing salon called "Bliss Elements" it is a Green Salon located in Wilmington DE and they are fabulous! They colored, trimmed and straighten my hair. I felt very at home, they are very professional and friendly.

These pictures are taken after 2 and half weeks of getting it done. I meant to take pictures fresh out the salon but you know how life is. Nonetheless you can see the color change and drastic length increase. As you can see once again my hair is thicker and longer then last time.

After about a week or so I mainly wore my hair in protective styles. I also continued to style my hair in its natural styles since I did not want to apply any more heat to my hair. So I did twist outs and braid outs. They came out super cute. I was  very happy with my experience at the salon, I researched many salons to make sure if they were right for me and visited the ones I liked. I know many of use "Natural Girls" are scared to go to the salons but if you do you research and make sure they understand what you want, it will go just fine :)

Hair Obstacles - Some Advice on Accepting Advice

It's interesting to me that many so people are so eager to give their opinion on natural hair or anything else for that matter. Especially when your a Newbie you want to learn all you can about natural hair. It really does take time, effort and a whole lot of patience.

Let me tell you though, you cant listen to everybody. When Naturals get together there is bound to be a discussion about natural hair, and everybody wants to express them self. Usual the newbie/transitioner is cornered in some way and a ridiculous amount of information is dumped on them in less then 5 minutes. Let me put it this way don't take advice from people who don't know how to do their hair! I say this because its ironic to me that the people who can't maintain or style their natural hair properly are the ones giving advice.

Let me break it down for you:

1. Be realistic - Growth takes time, maintaining and caring for hair takes patience. All so remember that each curly is different and our hair will react differently to products and styles. So even though you may follow someone recipe and instructions to the T, it may not come out the same way. Practice makes perfect and you really have to find what works for YOU.

2. Observe carefully - Look at who is giving the advice and if they truly can help you. If their hair is in braids, or weave majority of the time, how are they going to help you maintain your natural hair in its natural state if they never have their hair in that state? If you notice their hair is dry and not cute, why use the same products or techniques?

3. Don't feel pressured - Many times Naturals are a little pushy. I think this is because we are so passionate about our hair and all we have learned. So sometimes we say BUY this, TRY this, oh this will be the BEST for YOU, and we don't know the hair of the Natural we are speaking to.

4. Talk to the True Curly - When I say true curly I mean someone who has success with styling, growing and maintaining their natural hair in its natural state. Someone who has a head of hair you admire.

5. Listen to YOUR HAIR - Use what works for YOU not what works for someone else. Many people are very pushy with their products, and try to influence you to buy this or that.. If something is working for you KEEP using it. If you are searching for products, try samples. They are cheap, some are free, this is an expensive way to test a product. If you can't find samples ask the True Curly and or Pushy Curly to let you borrow their product so you can test it out. Or see if they have any products they are not using that they can give you to try. Product Swaps and Samples are the best!!!

Hair Update / Rant

Greetings!

It has been a long time since I have posted anything or ranted about my hair. So here we go!

Product Swap - Here are a couple updates on some of the products I received.

Nature's Answer - Pure Vegetable Glycerin, 4 oz liquidAmong the many things I received in my last product swap, one of the item was vegetable glycerin. I researched the product and I found it is supposed to be very moisturizing & softens hair. Which puzzled me a little seeing that it was in the Product Swap due to causing dry, brittle hair. So I figured, hey I have it why not try it out. I mixed the glycerin in my spray bottle, for refreshing my hair, re wetting etc... Recently I miss placed my spray bottle well this week I found it again, so i set my hair in flat twist. Low and behold the day after my hair was brittle and dry. Now I had experienced this before but I was not convinced it was the glycerin, but now I am convinced that the Glycerin does not benefit me in any way.
Deva Curl No Poo 32oz,Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser

Deva Curl - I LOVE the No Poo Shampoo. My hair feels clean and not stripped. The rest of the Deva Curl products dry out my hair, the conditioner, deep conditioner etc., does not leave my hair feel moisturized at all. BUT I LOVE the No Poo Shampoo it is definitively a keeper!

Aveeno Aveeno Nourish+Style Soft Hold Gel-Crème, 5.0 fl ouncesGarnier Fructis Curl Sculpting Cream Gel, Extra Strong - 5 oz (142g)

The Aveeno and Garnier do nothing for me. So I will save that for the next product swap, for someone who I think will love it.

COLOR - YES People, September is the month Trim, Color, Straight. I am determined :)

Detangling is a BREEZE!

So I went away for an extended long weekend, and forgot my comb! I was soaked with chlorine water so its was a serious MUST that I wash my locks. Thankfully my best bud is Naturally Fly too and she had this ridiculosly wonderful COMB from the corner store. I have never had an issue with detangling my hair, but this comb was such a breeze! So Yesterday I picked one up for $1, so of course I had to buy too. The combs depicted above are not the combs that i brought, similar though. So many people talk about buying a specific comb or brush that cost more then the products we buy, in the end you could just visit your closets beauty supply store.

Hair Obstacles - Tangles

Tangles are a Big Issue here are 5 tips that will help you cut down those tangles!

Detangling hair Thoroughly - Wet hair loaded with conditioner & a wide tooth comb is the best way to detangle your hair. I find that washing my hair in the shower is the best, plus its less of mess then in the kitchen.

Removing all shed hair - When you detangle its important to remove all shed hair. This hair can create the tangles and knots that you do not want. So remove them from your hair, hands and comb.

Section Hair - When washing, conditioning etc... make sure your hair is in sections. This makes your hair easy to manage and will cut down on tangling, this is when your hair is wet and when its dry for styling.

Wearing Protective Styles - Tuck ends in, this will protect them.

Take your time and be gently - Always comb from tip to root, gradually making your way up the root. Don't rip through your hair, only style, wash, condition when you have sufficient amount of time to dedicate to it. Do not rush.

Upclose in Texture

Conditioner OVERLOAD! Last night I washed my hair with my one of my "Loves" Aussie Moist. I have a liter bottle that I picked up from Target for $5.00 a long time ago and it is still very full, even though I use a good amount of it for Co-washes and detangling. Any who, I wanted to show you my texture up close, since I have not been able to capture it very well. My texture starts loose and then gradually gets tighter, you can see this in the last picture. The curls are very small.
Personally, I am not really into "curl typing" because I have so many textures or curl types in my hair. If I use a product for one type it may not work for the other sections of my hair. I have found that since I went natural my texture has slowly but surely changing. My whole texture was much looser, and now it has curled a little tighter. I think this would have to do with the serious limit of heat and protective styles. My hair is GROWING GROWING, this is so exciting, just imagine the length for the length check in SEPTEMBER! Cant Wait!

Elongate your Twist outs

Twists outs are a cute style.  Small twist can create a beautiful deep wave, but your hair seriously shrinks up in length and in fullness. Shrinkage is not a favorite of most naturals. So how do you stretch out those cute twist outs? Unravel all of your twist. Take 4-5 pieces of hair and twists them into a Bantu knot. Do this through out all your hair. The twisting of the Bantu knot will elongate and preserve your twist outs AND give you a little curl on the ends. I tried this during the week and loved the results! Try using a Bantu Knot to elongate your next style :)
